These are the monuments of Talayotic Menorca to see in autumn

If you are a lover of history and nature, you can't miss the opportunity to explore some of the most important sites of Talayotic Menorca. These places will not only transport you to ancient times, but also allow you to enjoy the rich biodiversity and unique landscapes of our island.

A year of World Heritage

In Menorca, where nature and history intertwine in a unique way, lies one of the most impressive jewels of our heritage: Talayotic Menorca, a collection of archaeological sites that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on September 18 last year. This recognition highlights its extraordinary cultural and historical value.

Here is a list of the main sites so you know where to start your visit. Although, it is also true that there are over 1,500 archaeological sites (not all of them are part of the World Heritage designation) to choose from. Here's our list!

1. Torre d’en Galmés (Alaior)

The first stop we suggest is Torre d’en Galmés, the largest of Talayotic Menorca. Located on a hill with sea views, this settlement offers an impressive panorama of the island's southern coast. Here you will find a large number of structures, including three talayots, several dwellings, a taula enclosure, and a water collection system. Walking through Torre d’en Galmés is like walking through a true prehistoric city, and it’s a perfect place to reflect on history and enjoy the serenity of the natural surroundings.

2. Talatí de Dalt (Maó)

Located a few kilometers from Maó, Talatí de Dalt is another site you must visit. This settlement stands out for its natural surroundings, surrounded by oak trees and typical island shrubs, making the visit a doubly enriching experience. The taula at Talatí de Dalt is particularly fascinating, as it is partially tilted, giving it a mysterious and unique air. In addition to the taula, the site features several talayots and remains of dwellings that will help you better understand the social and architectural structure of the Talayotic people.

3. Torralba d’en Salort (Alaior)

Another must-see site is the settlement of Torralba d’en Salort, one of the largest and best-preserved on the island. Here you can admire one of the most imposing "taulas" in Menorca, those enigmatic T-shaped constructions believed to have had a religious or ceremonial use. In addition to the taula, Torralba d’en Salort preserves talayots, dwellings, and a fascinating water collection system.

4. Son Catlar (Ciutadella)

Son Catlar is the only Talayotic settlement in Menorca that fully retains its wall. This fortification, which surrounds the entire settlement, is a testament to the strategic and defensive importance of this site. Inside, you can explore talayots, dwellings, and communal spaces that will transport you to the Bronze Age.

5. Naveta des Tudons (Ciutadella)

We conclude with one of the most emblematic monuments of Talayotic Menorca: the Naveta des Tudons. This structure, dating from around 1200 BC, is one of the best-preserved funerary monuments of Balearic prehistory. Its name comes from its shape, which resembles an upside-down ship. The Naveta des Tudons is a place where you will feel a connection with the ancient civilizations that inhabited Menorca and can appreciate the impressive level of engineering they achieved.
