If you are a lover of history and nature, you cannot miss the opportunity to explore some of the most important sites of Menorca Talayótica. These sites will not only transport you to distant times but also allow you to enjoy the rich biodiversity and the unique landscapes of our island.

A year of World Heritage

In Menorca, where nature and history intertwine uniquely, lies one of the most impressive jewels of our heritage: the Menorca Talayótica, a group of archaeological sites that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on September 18th of last year. A recognition that underscores its extraordinary cultural and historical value.

Here is a list of the main sites so you know where to start visiting them. Although, it is also true that you have more than 1,500 archaeological sites (not all are part of the World Heritage declaration), among which to choose. Here goes our list!

1. Torre d’en Galmés (Alaior)

The first stop we propose is Torre d’en Galmés, the largest of the Menorca Talayótica. Located on a hill overlooking the sea, this settlement offers an impressive panoramic view of the island's southern coast. Here you will find a large number of structures, including three talayots, several houses, a taula enclosure, and a water collection system. Walking through Torre d’en Galmés is like walking through a true prehistoric city, and it is a perfect place to reflect on history and enjoy the serenity of the natural surroundings.

2. Talatí de Dalt (Maó)

Located just a few kilometers from Maó, Talatí de Dalt is another site you must visit. This settlement stands out for its natural environment, surrounded by oak trees and typical underbrush of the island, which makes the visit a doubly enriching experience. The taula of Talatí de Dalt is particularly fascinating, as it is partially tilted, giving it a mysterious and unique air. In addition to the taula, the site has several talayots and remains of houses that will allow you to better understand the social and architectural structure of the talayotic people.

3. Torralba d’en Salort (Alaior)

Another must-see site is the settlement of Torralba d’en Salord, one of the largest and best-preserved on the island. Here you can admire one of the most imposing "taulas" in Menorca, those enigmatic T-shaped constructions that are believed to have had a religious or ceremonial use. Besides the taula, Torralba d’en Salord preserves talayots, houses, and a fascinating water catchment system.

4. Son Catlar (Ciutadella)

Son Catlar is the only talayotic settlement in Menorca that completely retains its wall. This fortification, which surrounds the entire settlement, is a testament to the strategic and defensive importance of this place. Inside, you can explore talayots, houses, and communal spaces that will transport you to the Bronze Age.

5. Naveta des Tudons (Ciutadella)

We conclude with one of the most emblematic monuments of the Menorca Talayótica: the Naveta des Tudons. This structure, dating from approximately 1200 B.C., is one of the best-preserved funerary monuments of Balearic Prehistory. Its name comes from its shape, which resembles an inverted ship. The Naveta des Tudons is a place where you will feel the connection with the ancient civilizations that inhabited Menorca and you will be able to appreciate the impressive level of engineering they achieved.
